Cathedral Chapel Church was built in 1927 as a temporary chapel that would serve as the ministerial arm to a cathedral church to be constructed at Wilshire and Rimpau. Due to the population of Los Angeles moving westward, this new cathedral church would replace the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana located at 2nd and Main. The church was built as a temporary chapel, the site only included a small rectory and did not include a school or parish center. After the Great Depression and World War II, the idea of a new cathedral on the west side was abandoned.
In 1935, La Brea was extended southerly and the area significantly regraded. La Brea was lowered eight feet and the church along with it. A 150-seat addition to the church was completed shortly after, bringing the capacity to 750 seats.
RSHA completed the 2013 remodel to the naïve, sanctuary and predella of the church. The project included the addition of a baptismal pool that includes 4 x 5 ft high waterfall over alabaster slots that were surplus from the construction of our Lady of the Angeles Cathedral.
RSHA is currently working on the addition of a 2150 SF community room to serve the churches ministries and the adjacent community.
