Located within the historic Spaulding Square neighborhood on the border of West Hollywood and Los Angeles, this renovation and addition thoughtfully reimagines a 1919 Colonial Revival bungalow while preserving its historic character. Working alongside award-winning design architect Peter Culley of Spatial Affairs Bureau, Herman Architects served as the Architect of Record, guiding the project through the technical and regulatory requirements of construction.
The design carefully balances old and new, making selective improvements to the original home while introducing a contemporary addition inspired by the bungalow’s architectural language. Positioned to preserve the home’s historic east façade, the expansion creates a series of landscaped courtyard gardens that strengthen the connection between architecture and outdoor living.
Natural light, ventilation, and indoor-outdoor living were central to the design. Expansive openings, sculptural skylights, raised ceilings, and a dramatic dual-pitched roof bring a modern sense of openness while remaining respectful of the home’s historic scale and the character of the surrounding neighborhood.
